CRIT CLUB is a creative support group that emerged from Pause or Pay - a UK-wide cross-university action group led by students that formed in April 2020 in response to the disruption of studio-based learning by the pandemic. As part of the Alternative Platform working group, we wanted to create the spaces that had been lost from closed studios and a restricted access to our education.
The space was open to anyone! We welcomed people from across the UK, Europe and the US, and our partcipants included practicing artists, students, tutors and friends.
CRIT CLUB was facilitated online from March 2021, allowing us to reach new audiences and meet people outside of our creative and social bubbles. Since December 2021, in-person crits and workshops based in London were held alongside online crits.
I was invited to speak about CRIT CLUB with Pause or Pay on a podcast, which you can listen to here. Ellis Tree also thoughtfully wrote about my work in her dissertation on self-organised alternatives to art school.
You can view our Instagram archive and our email inbox (critclubsayshello@gmail.com) still remains open for further enquiries.
For various reasons, CRIT CLUB closed in August 2024.
